Gaslamp Accomodations
Many nights, people out on the sidewalks in the gaslamp district, San Diego Ca outnumber those inside, and lines of cars carouse the streets in search of a highly coveted parking spot. Valet parking attendants typically charge $7 per vehicle, with a 10-minute retrieval time. Although San Diego has great hotels all along the coast, there are many fine hotels located right in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter.


Gaslamp Plaza Suites
One nice place to stay, the Gaslamp Plaza Suites, is located in the old Watt-Robinson Office Building. At 11 stories, it was the first skyscraper in San Diego when it was completed in 1913. Seventy-Five years later, the building reopened as a 60-suite plaza, offering rooms for the night and for vacation rentals. Most of the original architecture have been preserved in keeping with the status of being listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

While the lobby looks stately with its marble floors, brass elevator doors, and glass chandelier, the hallways harken back to the office corridors they once were. Doors to the suites have large, curtained glass windows and mail slots.

Spacious, Historic Suites
Inside the spacious suites, though, the rooms are beautifully appointed in shades of mauve and green. The Plaza offers a one-bedroom suite that has separate sleeping and living areas with kitchenette, two sofas, two desks, two television sets, queen bed, and large windows with window seats.

Their corner rooms present great views of Fifth Avenue and E Street, which is the hub of the Gaslight Quarter. From one of the corner rooms one may hear the voices of revelers waiting to get into the popular Club 66 nightclub. The clinking of bottles being tossed in the trash in the morning could prove disturbing to light sleepers that may want to request a room on the northeast side of the hotel.
