La Jolla Child Family Entertainment
The shallow, calm waters off the south end of La Jolla Shores beach offer snorkelers a good opportunity to see timid leopard sharks in 5- to 10-foot waters over a sandy bottom on a normal day.

Since the 1940s divers have known about the harmless, beautifully spotted sharks that can be seen year-round here. If swimming with sharks scares you, the Museum of Contemporary Art on Prospect Street is a great place to visit.

Another popular activity is Camp La Jolla, a family fitness program.



Families tackling weight loss together is part of a growing summer trend. These programs teach exercise, nutrition and family dynamics. A world full of fast food, television and video games is a combo platter that’s contributing to soaring obesity rates. So kids at Camp La Jolla learn portion control by serving other campers, and parents go home armed with healthy recipes.

La Jolla Playhouse
La Jolla Playhouse is an artistic sanctuary for the most distinctive voices in the American Theater and has won more than 300 theater awards including the 1993 Tony Award as America’s Outstanding Regional Theater.


More than 120,000 people experience the enchantment of the Playhouse each year, attending shows and partaking in education activities. The Performance Outreach Project visits schools and community centers with an original play for young people.

La Jolla Playhouse has made its mark on the international theater scene, under the brilliant creative direction of two-time Tony® Award-winner Des McAnuff.






A long list of the Playhouse’s productions has gone on to stages around the world, from Broadway to Moscow. Founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer, the La Jolla Playhouse was revived in 1983 under the leadership of Des McAnuff, who served as Artistic Director from 1983 to 1994.

La Jolla Comedy Store
To get a five-minute spot on Potluck Night (Sundays) at the Comedy Store, comics and wannabes call store manager Tony Galli a week in advance. The Comedy Store is closed Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday is “Best of San Diego Night.”

National acts are booked Thursday through Saturday. Since the Comedy Store opened in La Jolla in 1976 – it was in Pacific Beach for one year before moving to its current location – nearly all the big comic names have graced its stage: David Letterman, Gary Shandling, Gallagher, even the infamous Roseanne.

Like its sister establishment in Hollywood, Comedy Store La Jolla hosts some of the best national touring and local talent. Cover charges range from nothing on open mike nights to $20 or more for national acts. A two-drink minimum applies for all shows. Seating is at bistro style tables.

La Jolla Half Marathon
The La Jolla half marathon is one of America’s most challenging and picturesque runs. The course starts next to the Del Mar Fairgrounds entrance, and follows a charming route along the coast before reaching the challenging climb to the summit of Torrey Pines State Park. After leaving the park, the course continues to the beautiful residential district of La Jolla Shores, and finishes on the grass in the park at La Jolla Cove.
