Torrey Pines, much like Bethpage Black on Long Island, has a unique system to guarantee continued public admittance to the course. On weekends, individuals turn up as early as 6 p.m. the previous evening to wait in line for the first come/first serve tee times that are given out from dawn till the first reservations at 7:30 a.m.

Torrey Pines consists of two beautiful, 18-hole championship courses on the shoreline between La Jolla and Del Mar, only 20 minutes from downtown San Diego. Course conditions can be less than perfect in summer because of the sheer number of people lined up to play, and “tee scalpers” aren’t unusual. Tip: Single golfers stand a good chance of getting on the course if they just turn up and get on the waiting list for a threesome.

The courses, which are located on a spectacular bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean ranks with Pebble Beach as one of California’s top golfing destinations. The South Course measures 7,227 yards from the blue tees and is the tougher of the two, although the design includes a good selection of tee boxes and yardages to make the course more accessible to less skillful golfers. The North Course is shorter and more forgiving overall.
