Located at the most southwesterly extreme of the United States, the beacon reached 39 miles on a clear night. This solemn green, chaparral-covered point of land remained outside the known mapped world until September of 1552, when the first European expedition to the coast of North America stepped unto its shore. Ordered by the King of Spain and the Viceroy of New Spain (Mexico), explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was to search for a legendary river connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Over 400 feet above sea level, balanced on a rocky precipice beaten by constant winds, the Star of the Silver Gate” overlooks San Diego Bay and the pounding surf of the Pacific Ocean – just as it has done since the wicks were first lighted on November 15, 1855. Sea travel had significantly increased with the start of the California Gold Rush, California becoming a state and the ensuing settlement of the area.
